Hello,
I upgraded my PC from Vista to Windows 7 (Home Premium) last weekend, and I have noticed a dramatic difference in the behaviour of my Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller under Windows 7. As background, I have been using Vista on this PC for about a year-and-a-half now without any network connectivity issues.
In this case, the network connection appears to drop at different times. I have not yet figured out if it is triggered by the amount of data, or at different times, but I do know that a significant amount of data traffic through connection will crash it. For example, I have an online backup service, and I have to re-upload all of my content because I did a clean install for Windows 7. I'm in the process of uploading 28 GB -- the upload does not get far before there is no network connectivity any longer.
When I run an ipconfig, it appears that the computer no longer has an IP address. When I run an ipconfig /renew, a DHCP lease cannot be acquired from my router (which I have also had for over a year-and-a-half without issues). I initially thought it was my router, so I reset that and did an ipconfig /renew, but the same symptoms persisted. Then I ran the network troubleshooter. It reset the adapter and everything worked fine. I started the upload again, and sure enough, a few hours later, same problem. Had to reset the adapter through the troubleshooter and it works fine right now.
I did a search for similar issues, and I found the following post:

Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000base-t Controller Driver Update
It appears that I have very similar symptoms, and I am also running with an ASUS chipset. I note that after I installed the clean version of Windows 7, one of the first Windows Update items installed was one for the Atheros L1 Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T Controller. The 'View Details' box links me to this URL, but there's a redirect, and nothing helpful shows-up: http://winqual.microsoft.com/support/?driverid=20304237
